Femto-LASIK – laser instead of knife
Visual impairments can be permanently corrected using the Femto LASIK method. Shortsightedness of up to -8 dioptres (dpt), longsightedness of up to +4 dpt and astigmatism of up to 6 dpt can be treated with one of the world’s most commonly applied procedures for eye laser operations.

Prerequisites for Femto LASIK
First, a person with a visual impairment must be at least 18 years old to be able to undergo such an operation. Further conditions for a Femto LASIK operation:
- No serious eye disease should be present
- Laser eye treatment may not be carried out during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
- The cornea must be thick enough
- The visual impairment should not have changed fundamentally in the last two years
The Femto LASIK operation procedure
Whether an operation with a LASIK femto laser is possible needs to be clarified in advance. Eye lasering is not the best option for every kind of visual impairment. Every eye is unique and, with the help of wavefront analysis, it is possible to test eyes individually. Precise data is recorded using wavefront measurement, which helps the operating surgeon to carry out a precise analysis of the corneal surface. Once the thorough preliminary examinations have been concluded and no reservations remain regarding a Femto LASIK operation, the wavefront-guided LASIK procedure can begin.

The eye operation or lasering occurs in three steps:
Step 1: The corneal flap is prepared within a few minutes with the femtosecond laser (“bladeless” LASIK). Thanks to individual, personalised wavefront treatment (aberrometer/wavefront technology) with iris recognition, the laser is adjusted for each eye. The precisely and gently prepared flap is lifted. Now the actual laser surgery begins.
Step 2: The excimer laser individually corrects the refractive error for each eye, using the data provided by the computer-aided wavefront analysis, which takes incredibly precise measurements. The modelling of the cornea begins.
Step 3: The flap is then carefully closed and now acts like a natural plaster, re-growing by itself.
Extremely precise treatment, even of severe astigmatism, can also be carried out using a dynamic rotational eye-tracking system (Advanced Control Eyetracking ACE). During the treatment, the axis position of the astigmatism correction is checked 240x/second and adjusted if necessary. This allows for a previously unheard of level of precision.

How much does Femto LASIK cost?
The costs for this tried-and-tested eye lasering method have to be considered individually. Every eye and every treatment is different and has to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Aberrometer-aided Femto LASIK treatment and flap preparation with the femtosecond laser is available from €1,375 per eye up to -5 dioptres (dpt) and +3 dpt. Eye lasering from -8 dpt and up to +4 dpt costs €1,450 per eye, including all pre- and post-examinations.
Since both short- and longsightedness are classed as diseases, they are regarded as medical treatment and are tax-deductible. In addition, we would like to point out that financing with terms of 12 and 72 months is likewise possible.

Difference from “normal” LASIK?
The most important difference between the two eye laser treatment methods is that in a “normal” LASIK operation a small incision still occurs, while this is eliminated with femto LASIK. Femto LASIK combines the proven excimer laser technology with the new femtosecond laser technology:
instead of the mechanical microkeratome (a tiny metal blade), a further laser is used to create the corneal flap. The femtosecond laser creates very thin corneal flaps of precise dimensions, making LASIK surgery possible even with severe short- and farsightedness and very thin corneas. The IntraLase femtosecond laser was introduced in the USA in 2001. Since then, millions of patients worldwide have been treated with this “bladeless” LASIK procedure.
Femto LASIK: risks/possible complications after the operation
Every person with a visual impairment, and every patient generally, must be aware that in the event of surgical operations a certain residual risk remains and complications can occur. However, since femto eye lasers are specially adapted to the characteristics of each eye – precise wavefront analysis makes this possible – such risks must be regarded as extremely low and unknown.
After the laser treatment, you should not rub your eyes, and you should take a break from sport for one to two weeks in all cases. Going to the sauna or to the swimming pool is only advisable after about two weeks. Moreover, the operating ophthalmic surgeon will inform you when you can resume your work and when you can start driving again.

LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery. For many years, it has been the scientifically accepted method for the treatment of visual impairments. LASIK is used by leading eye doctors worldwide. It is one of the most proven and most researched treatments.
LASIK is the result of cutting-edge technology. However, this method has been perfected even more in recent years. The result: femto LASIK. There is one difference between LASIK and femto LASIK: with LASIK the eye surgeon prepares the eye with a tiny scalpel, whereas with femto LASIK all steps during the surgery are carried out with a computer-aided laser.
No doctor is as precise as a computer. No microkeratome (a tiny scalpel) can be as precise as the bundled light of a laser. This combination – the precisely focused laser beam and the absolute precision of a computer – makes femto LASIK the method of choice for vision correction.
The femtosecond laser is set for each eye individually. It works evenly and with high precision and is gentle to the corneal tissue. The risk of infection and other complications is extremely low as the procedure is carried out in a sterile environment, without direct human contact. The safety of the femtosecond laser can also be measured in figures: the thickness of the corneal flap prepared by the laser varies only by around 5µm compared to approx. 50µm for standard LASIK.
The likelihood that your vision can be corrected with femto LASIK is extremely high: the method is suitable for 99% of all short- and farsighted patients.
Before we treat you, we carefully examine your eyes. This takes significantly longer than the surgery itself. For the femto LASIK procedure we first prepare your eyes using a femtosecond laser. This is virtually painless. Then the excimer laser corrects both eyes, one after the other.
Before you have femto LASIK eye surgery, your vision/prescription must be stable. Your eyes should be healthy without any acute eye disease (e.g. keratoconus). The procedure is not normally carried out during pregnancy or nursing. All patients must be at least 18 years of age, i.e. they must be adults.
You will normally be able to see clearly again within 24 hours after surgery. Without glasses, of course.
You can see normally relatively quickly; full vision without restrictions should exist after about two weeks.
Just to be on the safe side, it is advisable to refrain from sporting activities, solarium and sauna visits and the swimming pool for one to two weeks.
Ideally, you will no longer have anything to do with visual aids after the operation. However, your ability to see may also deteriorate markedly. In this case, another operation may be necessary. The same applies to presbyopia, which impairs eyesight considerably.
The actual operation time per eye is only a few seconds; complete laser treatment, including preparation and fixation, is over after a few minutes.
